MAKEUP CAREERS
There are many channels for a makeup artist to venture into such as fashion, commercials and etc.


FASHION

As a fashion makeup artist you might work on photographic or editorial assignments for print photography or venture into creative catwalk fashion shows. There are many opportunities also to work for leading makeup brands with jobs ranging from in-house makeup designer, sales rep, in-store manager or artists.


COMMERCIALS

Commercials are a notably popular choice for many makeup artists preferring to work on a freelance basis. It often calls on a broad skill base for both hair and makeup due to the varied and challenging work nature. Commercials are shorter in duration, generally within one day to three weeks. This opens up an opportunity for you to work with people from numerous distinctive industries.


TV AND FILM

Makeup Artists attached with TV stations often do shift work involving news presenters and presenters for current affairs and magazine type shows. It is a well-suited career choice for people who wish to be employed on either a part time or full time basis. 

TV and Film Makeup Artists are generally required to work as part of a team. There are so many genres in this medium. Depending on the nature of the script, your work will range across contemporary, period, futuristic, horror and high fashion. Makeup application and following continuity on your actor to the onset standby are among the many tasks done on a daily basis. Long hours would be a career norm, with your job starting from early in the morning either in a studio or on location. Job duration on a TV show may vary from 3 to 7 months with ongoing series of work. Feature films tend to be shorter, ranging from 6 weeks to 1 year for larger productions.

Subsequently, a career advancement option available is for you to strive to become a makeup designer as head of your own department. This is a sizable responsibility where you are in charge of a team comprised of makeup artists and hairstylists; and are often assigned to more than one film concurrently. It may involve fundamental elements of designing the makeup/hair look of each character and collaborating with the director, producers and costume designers to achieve a final product. Being Head of a Makeup Team also involves set up of the department, adhering closely to a budget, ongoing daily organisation and actors’ welfare.


OTHER FREELANCE OPTIONS
